About Us
BBQ Pirates started as group of co-
workers, interested in cooking,
naive enough to think we could
enter a barbecue competition and
win it all.
Originally called ‘BBQ Pirates of
the Pork’n Bean’, a homage to a
well known movie of the time, we
shortened the name after
explaining on too many occasions
how we came up with the name in
the first place.
Our grilling/smoking experience, as
a group, was to cook for co-
workers before holidays and
special occasions in the
department in which we all worked.
Our supervisor at the time, loved to
experiment with different recipes,
so we were exposed to many
different styles and flavors of foods.
He was particularly enamored with
the Caribbean, with Jamaican jerk
seasoning being one of his
favorites. This affinity with the
islands also was a deciding factor
in our team name.
The company where we work
manufactures some of the largest
earth moving equipment in the
world, so using bits and pieces of
scrap metal and parts (don’t tell our
employer), a grill/smoker was
assembled, large enough to cook
for fifty people (the size of the
department at the time). This grill
has seen everything from steak
and hamburgers to fish and brine
marinated pork chops.
Competition led us to our BBQ
sauces (one made with Jamaican
Rum) and rubs and seasonings. A
hit with visitors at the competitions
as well as friends and co-workers,
we decided to start a small
business (the trials and tribulations
many and the frustrations
immense). While all of the cooking
events we enter are for charity, an
expensive undertaking to say the
least, we hope that the sale of our
products can help us to continue
with this endeavor as well as
provide us with an activity that we
can continue once we reach
retirement (rapidly approaching for
several of us).
We continue to refine our cooking
skills, at the same time we have a
blast making our sauces and
mixing our spices. This site is not
about selling our product but
showing our fondness for
barbecue, grilling, and cooking in
general. That is not to say we won’t
try to get you to buy our product
(see links for location where they
can be purchased), but this site
was developed to provide
information and above all else, fun!
We hope you will enjoy this site,
comment if you like, we enjoy
hearing your comments and
suggestions.
